Reverence Coffee Roasters, growing beyond just a family affair.

Featured roaster – NOVEMBER 2017

Our November roaster Reverence Coffee Roasters are back sporting a brand new look, a new cafe, new team, yet the same heart.

Last feature, brother and sister team Andreas and Annie Martinu were doing their bit to introduce specialty coffee to Melbourne’s West, opening their first eponymous cafe roastery in 2012 in the inner Melbourne suburb of Ascot Vale.

As people started to sit up and take notice, the demand for their coffee grew (a good problem to have!), so it was time to make the move further afield to accommodate a much larger roastery in Melbourne’s North.

Accordingly, their former cafe had reincarnated into their new flagship cafe Rogue District now in Brunswick.

Originally a family team, they’ve now expanded into a bigger Reverence family of over ten staff with some familiar industry faces including Ryan, Martin, along with Andreas and Annie – all of whom keep the roasters pumping and customers well-caffeinated.

Andreas on their coffee; “Our roast style leans toward the lighter roast of specialty coffee today which retains the provenance of each bean, whilst taking cues from the traditional Italian style espresso”.

As a result, they roast and blend in such a way to create a coffee with good body, flavour, balance and development to not only keep the specialty coffee drinker excited, but also the everyday cafe customer that just wants a coffee to taste like coffee with the ultimate goal to keep them coming back for more.

Like a true coffee geek, Andreas names quality control as the highlight of his job – “tweaking our roasts, changing coffee machine temperatures and parameters and other little adjustments along the way to bring out the absolute best in our beans”.

He believes a good cup of coffee is one that is clean and balanced with notes of fruit, sweet caramels and chocolates… (“Much like their Lion Tamer blend!” he adds). This is the guiding principle when designing their blends – “You’ve got to be able to find the right balance of flavours, acidity, body and finish to deliver a really amazing cup of coffee”.

So, on that note, enjoy yourself a good brew by Reverence Coffee Roasters this month:

Espresso drinkers

You’re tasting their Lion Tamer blend. A perfect combination of El Salvador, Tanzanian, Colombian and Guatemalan beans – taste milk chocolate, vanilla and hazelnut flavours with a toffee and cherry finish.

Explorers, you’re also tasting the El Molinto. Treat your tastebuds to mouthwatering chocolate custard flavours with subtle citrus acidity, a syrupy body and a marzipan and cocoa finish.

Filter Drinkers

You’re tasting the Konga. This Ethiopian Yirgacheffe heirloom varietal yields flavours of berries and stone fruit with a raspberry acidity and a deliciously chocolate liqueur finish.

Explorers, you’re tasting the Anderacha. This heirloom variety from Ethiopia carries floral, orange, grape, stone fruit flavours and lime acidity.
